finally looked at my Costume College Reg Book

So I *finally* got a chance to actually *look* through my Costume College (2010) Registration book and I'm just excited about all the classes! Yay! :) I'm torn, though, on what (if any) limited classes I should apply for this year. A couple I'm interested in are out cause I'm teaching my classes against them (there's overlap in times which won't work). And a few others I'm interested in taking...they're against when the guest teachers (Shelly Foote and Shawna Trpcic) have their (unlimited) classes scheduled! Agh! (The ones by Shawna Trpcic are listed as "To Be Determined" right now, but considering I'm a fan of her work - she did the costumes for Firefly, Angel, & Dollhouse! - I'm totally game for attending any and all of her classes. :)

And with how busy I've been with packing & house hunting (and the emotional drama of dealing with my landlord and his broker while they're trying to show the place and get the condo sold), picking limited classes has not been a top priority right now. If I'm gonna turn in my form, its gotta be received by May 9th...and the longer I wait, the lower Recieved Number I get assigned (each form is assined a number in the order its received as its processed by Programming staff) which would affect my chances of getting into some classes (depending on how 'popular' the are with others wanting to be in the same class).

SOooo...maybe this year I just don't do any limited classes :). Might be the easiest solution for me. Certainly less stress NOW to not have to think about picking a class and getting my forms in right away.
    :)

Costume College 2010 Registration Book Arrived!

as my Twitter post said yesterday, I got my Costume College Registration book in the mail! Woo-hoo!

Like the new layout and larger format (more magazine style). I haven't had a chance to really look through it yet, but will try to do that today at some point. MUST go through and figure out what classes I'd like to take, especially Limited Attendance classes (registration forms due very soon! May 9th I think?), and when I'm teaching.

View of the Registration Book Cover (taken via my cell phone):

and here's the page showing the 2 Guest Teachers for this year:

    AWESOME!!

I'm *very* excited about this year's convention! (And not just cause I'm on the committee ;-).

    Costume College 2009...is over

    Whew! What a weekend.

Sorry I've been silent on here lately - lots of time/effort has been put into prepping for Costume College (CoCo). And it definitely paid off :).

And if you don't know what CoCo is...Wow! you mean I HAVEN'T talked your ear off about it yet? :) For more info, go here: http://www.costumecollege.org/

This year at CoCo I ran the Information Dept (Information Desk at Costume College), which was completely new for me. And, to make things MORE interesting, I decided to have a game at the Information Desk that CoCo Attendees could play. Basically, its a Wheel that you could spin, after after it stopped on a category, you answered a trivia question. Many of them were images that you had to look at and then guess the time period, the sewing tool, the movie/tv show, etc that it came from. I even had a section on Costume College trivia (past colleges/conventions). :)

Here's the full list of categories:
    1. What’s my Scene? (Movies/TV Stills)
    2. Say What?!? (Movies/TV Quotes)
    3. Costume College Trivia
    4. Sewing Tools & Equipment
    5. Unmentionables (Undergarments through the ages)
    6. Words of Wisdom (Helpful hints and tips provided by other costumers and some of our vendors).
    7. Out of Time (Guess the Time Period)
    8. Spin Again
    9. Ghodfuzzy to the Rescue! (Free Choice. Player gets to choose the category.)

I had 12 segments on the wheel, so a few categories were repeated. Overall, I had a great reaction to the game, and everyone had fun (Yay!). So I'm glad I put all that work into it. Thanks go to various people for helping me build the wheel itself (vadenalim) and assemble the categories on site too (including collency, casketgirl, Maria, bygoneglamour, and others that I'm forgetting right now). Thank You!!! :)

I had 100 Name Badge Ribbons to give out to those who played the game, and by Sunday (morning) they were gone!

Information Desk itself went fairly smoothly overall. Some minor kinks that can be worked out later. I definitely have ideas for how to improve it (though some things will probably change just cause we're changing hotels next year...BIG change for us). A few holes in the schedule for covering the Info Desk (schedule is a tad harder to fill when ONLY Committee members or CGW Board of Directors can man the table, but various people stopped by and stepped up when there was a need for another body at the table. Thanks! :)

Oh, and I taught my Intro to Leather Tooling class this year, and it went Spectacularly! I could have probalby used some more time, and a few minor glitches, but nothing serious. The students had a great time (I had limited the class to a max of 10 students - all pre-registered so I knew how many to prep for) and did really well on learning the various steps of tooling leather even though we had to rush through a few stages. (They got the idea of the stage, but they could have used some more time to bevel or pear shade...mostly beveling...cause there's a LOT of beveling going on in the design...and its a good thing to practice. Lots of designs incorporate beveling). I even got requests from various students to teach this again next year (so they can bring back their projects and show me what they've been working on and how they've improved) and got a round of applause. (Yay!!! :)

I attended my 3 Limited Classes and they were all great! So very glad I got it. :) (Though I had to leave early from my first one cause I just wasn't feeling well and had to lay down/get fluids in me. I admit I am a bit dissapointed I missed out on good portion of that class, since it was a hands-on demonstration of dying different types of fabrics - something I've been interested in for a while - but I did get the handout and some samples. Plus I have some contact info for the teacher. She and I bonded a bit, too, when I drove her out on Thursday to an office supply store to get new handouts copied for her various classes since they were forgotten at home...and she was from out of state! So I'm not too worried. I can probably pick her brain later if I have questions on stuff I missed while I'm reading the handout.)

The Saturday Evening (Time Traveler's) Gala this year was fabulous! I arrived a bit late (was working on my 1930s hair with the help of my roommate, first time attendee Laura who also happens to reenacts 1940s, and it took a bit longer than anticipated to get it just right...but it was worth it. :) Sewgirljen and Becca M (my other rommates) had managed to save me a seat at a nearby table. I must say - that table was a lot of fun. It's always nice when you meet new people and you get along! Plus the "Who am I?" game did help break the ice a bit more. (Only suggestion is to play it earlier in the evening, like between one of the courses, to help the table socialize earlier).

Dancing at the Gala was a blast. Of course, we started off with the Time Warp (tradition!) and the floor was packed. Then other music kicked in and the dance floor varied between decently croweded to packed most of the night, courtesy of obishawn's great ability to read the mood of the crowd. I gotta say, that was the best selection of dance tunes at a Gala yet. (Yay! Keep it up obishawn! :) Never made it in to the Red Carpet room to get my picture taken, but oh well. Got a few pics on my camera and friends cameras...I was too busy dancing and socializing in the main room! :)

Sunday afternoon had the Tea, and I had never attended the Tea at Costume College before...and chartreusekitty was the Tea Mistress (and had put together an awesome looking tea filled with fun games and had arranged for various people to bring their teapots so the tea could actually be served in real teapots - I brought my 1 teapot for her to use :) so I decided I just had to attend! Just as the Tea was starting, and I was about to buy one of the remaining tea tickets for sale (i.e. tickets sold are ones that someone had purchased before it was Sold Out, but now the person could no longer attend so the ticket is being re-sold for original purchase price) someone handed me a ticket that an attendee could no longer use and was willing to GIVE it away (without selling it). So I took it (gratefully)! I had a great time! (I did have to duck out at 3pm so that I could cover the Information Desk...since it was a blank slot on the schedule...but then Natalie, the CGW's treasurer popped by to see how things were going and sent me back inside to finish my Tea and she covered the Desk. Thanks Natalie!!! :)

Sunday Evening was the CGW Annual Meeting...and fortunately it was under 2 hrs. Woo-Hoo! And...bonus...the various people I really wanted to get elected to the Board, and I voted for, of course, actually *got* on the Board. Yay! :)

Afterwards, a bunch of us (9 total) went over to Millies to have dinner and just be silly. We had a blast! A lot of us are/were on the Committee so we've been super busy all weekend and prior to the convention with planning/prep and the actual mayhem of CoCo. So we definitely needed some downtime. :) I gotta say that dinner (the company) was great as always! And of course, we were silly...the laughter just flowed from our table/area. Good thing we kinda had a section to ourselves! :)

Monday was packing up and making sure we got everything out of the various rooms (including conference rooms). I stayed to help collency make sure all the stuff was out of the boardroom (where committee stuff had been piled) and also helped collency and obishawn make trips of stuff to their car so they could check out of their room. Afterwards, I hung out with collency while we waited for Chaz to come by and pick up the last bit of Tea decoratations (the Arch) and we brainstormed ideas for CoCo 2010. :) We (Collency, Chaz, his Head Minion, and I) grabbed lunch at Beeps down the street...and then we all went our seperate directions.

    Back to real life...and unpacking...now.
(And figuring out my receipts so I can turn in the ones for Costume College committee stuff and get reimbursed :)

time for the Costume College (2008) Postmortem

Well, time flies and it sure seems to be speeding along these days. Today is the Costume College 2008 Postmortem (a kind of debriefing meeting) which is being help up in the LA area from 11am till whenever. =) (It should only last a couple of hours...hopefully). Once we finish with the meeting, its time for the 2009 committee members to start planning and having meetings and such. And guess what? I'm on next year's committee too...although this time I won't be serving as Roommate Coordinator. I'll be training someone else while I take over the Information/Check-In department. (Cool, I know - it fits me since I do like to know practically everything =).

Anyways, must be off. Have to go print up some papers for my Roommates binder (so I can hand it off to the next Coordinator) and my official report for the 2008 year since I forgot to print off the papers earlier in the week.

    Later!
    =)

Just a little update on things...

Since its been SO slow at work these last few days (seriously!! It really needs to pick up around here soon), I thought I should probably post again to catch everyone up on some things.
    =)

[SIDE NOTE: wouldn't you know I *finally* start working on a blog post...and work decides to pick up! LOL! Yea that it got busier here, though =) ].

    1. The Apartment/Bathroom Remodel is (basically) done!

Finally! After 3 weeks, 6 days a week...the remodel is done! Well, except for one minor thing that hasn't yet been fixed (the drill bit broke when they went to drill holes for the toilet paper holder so that it can attach to the wall through the tiled section of the wall). But other than that, no more construction! Yes! Which means as of Saturday (Sept 27th) I officially began cleaning the apartment/my room of the layers of construction dust. It's still ongoing, but I'm finally making a discernable dent in my room. (I did my bookcase in the front/living room first - and between that dust and the dust I attempted to sweep up on the front porch - I ended up with a nice sinus headache later on. Ouch!)

    2. I'm going to Halloween Haunt on Oct 4th!!!

Yes, indeed. I actually am *finally* going to Halloween Haunt. It's been on my 'to do' list for like...forever, but I never got around to going. But this year, Jenn Mulvey has decided to go for her birthday, so I'm joining her and Bryce this Saturday at Knotts for the Haunt. (Anyone else want to join us? Please do!!!!)

And earlier in the day I'll be joining up with some of my friends to celebrate a few October birthdays at a Birthday lunch, which will be fun! =)

    3. I'm going to the Cicada Club on Oct 26th!

Yet another item I've wanted to do at some point. And now that I have some friends going on the 26th, and they've invited me along, I'm going! (Need to update my 1930s outfit to be more evening wear oriented, but that shouldn't be *too* hard to do). I'm currently trying to figure out how to do a really great updo for my hair that's 1930s styled, but haven't come across too many reference pics for med-long length hair. I'd like to do some fingerwaves and curls, probably. (Not that I've tried fingerwaves on me before...which reminds me, I'll need to go buy some setting lotion if I'm going to pull this waved look off properly =).

And since the Club will be featuring Dean Mora and his Orchestra, I think its time for me to start brushing up on my Swing Dancing so I can join in while I'm at the Cicada Club!

    4. Planning Mode for Moorpark (Civil War Event) is kicking in.

Yes indeed. Now that we're about a month (or less) out from the next Civil War event that my group is attending, planning mode is certainly starting to kick in. I'll only be doing/serving two mid-day meals at this event (to my group's members who pre-register/RSVP), and doing a bit of 'for fun' cooking for basically just me and a couple of others throughout the day. And of course, since the event is in November, when the weather is cooler, I'll definitely be making my Mulled Cider! Yum!

    5. Costume College 2008 Postmortem / Costume College 2009 Planning

Yup, it is already time for the CoCo 2008 Postmortem (Oct 12th in Santa Monica). I'll be attending and giving my report (which I still need to write - note to self) on the Roommates Dept. (As I was the Roommates Coordinator/Head for that Dept this last year...and the year before =). Next year, I'll be switching over to a different department (Information/Check-In) as the Head person and will train (unofficially assist) the new Roommates Coordinator. Should be fun! Plus its time to give our brief assesment/review of the classes we taught last year (which will be used most likely in a report at the Postmortem...or at least in reference for planning 2009 classes)...and that's something else I need to write up soon. (Just got an email from the CoCo 2009 Programming Chair asking for that summary report sometime this week). And I need to decide what classes I'd like to volunteer to teach next year. Hmm... Decisions. (Next year is an 18th Century Track. ).

Which reminds me! I need to fill out my Costume College Membership form and have it ready to mail. (The window of time for CGW members to mail in their form is approaching soon! =)

Ok. Well, I guess that's it for now. Must dash!

    Later!
    =)

    Back from Costume College (2008)!

Ok, I'm back, and relatively well rested from this year's Costume College. I'll try to write up some of my experiences shortly and get pictures posted soon. (I at least got all the photos off my camera and onto a disc. That's something =).

Now back to your regularly scheduled programing...

    Things are looking up!

Even though I had a LATE night last night, working on Costume College (class) stuff, I can now say that I'm *almost* done. My power point presentations are at a stage that I'm satisfied (and don't need to tweak anyore). Now I just need to work on my Handout for the Regency class and work with Becca on our shared class (Timeline) to get that handout finished. (At least that one is MOSTLY done). Whew!

So, tonight, I should be able to go to Kinkos after work and get my transparencies & handouts made. And then I can go to JoAnns to buy the items I need for my limited class (that I'm attending). And tomorrow morning I can pack and do a couple of errands (like pick up a few food items, put gas in my car, pick up an ice chest from my folks...and a set of speakers for my ipod) and then be on my way to Van Nuys for the Convention.

    Yeah!
    =)

And this year, I'm bringing my baithing suit (again) - and I am hopeful that I'll actually get some time to relax and use the pool at the hotel. (In all the years I've stayed at this hotel, I've never once made it to the pool. Fingers crossed for this year! =).

    Costume College is ALMOST here!

Ok, so the last few days I've been trying (not very sucessfully, I may add) to not panic as Costume College (R) gets closer. I've got three classes that I'm scrambling to finishin preparing for...and I would love to get a new petticoat done (to wear on Sunday during "Sunday Undies") but I'm thinking I just don't have the time to work on it.

The week and a half I was swamped at work really killed me on some of my prep time. I was so overwhelmed at work (and working late hourse/overtime), that I had no time/energy to devote to Costume College prep.

    Oh well.

Yesterday I had a sinus headache/migraine that woke me up at 3am and didn't really let me go back to sleep (even with meds). I think I dozed about an hour between 4:30am and 5:30am. So I was in no shape to work on Monday. I attempted to come in to work (late) for a few hours, but that was all I could managed (about 2-1/2 hrs) since I would get dizzy when I stood up, light hurt my eyes, and my head (and sinuses) were just killing me. So I went back home to eat lunch and sleep/rest.

I think my body was just trying to tell me that I *really* needed a break from all my stressing out and worrying over preparing for this year's Costume College (and at the same time also doing some preliminary planning for the August Huntington Beach Civil War Days event over Labor DAy and also help with a bit of my 30th Birthday planning). Too many things going on right now! =)

So, as of this morning, I'm starting to feel a bit better about my 3 presentations/classes. They still need a bit of work, but they're just about done. 2 of my classes I should be able to use power point, and one I will have to use transparencies (the power point I'm borrowing is already in use at the time of my class). Plus I've got handouts for each of my classes. They're mostly done, which is one reason I'm starting to feel a bit more like its coming together. The 1860s Woman handout only needs a slight tweak. The Timeline class handout (my portion) is 80-90% finished. And the Regency Etiquette class is probably about 80% finished.

Whew! Now I just need to finish off the presentations, get the Regency Etiquette presentation transferred from power point to Transparencies, and get a BUNCH of handouts printed for the classes. Oh, and I need to stop at JoAnns to pick up some items for one of my limited classes that I'll be attending as a student. I almost forgot that there is one class that I do need to bring supplies. (Most of the classes I attend are lecture/demo classes, where all I really need to bring is note-taking material and occasionally a basic sewing kit. This class is obviously more - we'll be making our very own metal-framed purse in class!).

And for those intested in what three classes *I'll* be teaching these year, they are (with class descriptions):

1860s Woman (Average American Women's Dress in the 1860s)

Instructor will discuss what the average American woman wore during the 1860s. Emphasis on middle/working class but will also present a brief look at more well-to-do "average" people. A brief look at undergarments will be given. As time permits, we will also discuss resources available for sewing patterns, fabrics, trims to help create your own basic day wear.

    Teacher Provides: Handout
Length of Class: 1 hr, 20 minutes
    Class Type: Lecture

“Regency Etiquette” (or “Etiquette, Deportment, and Social Manners in Regency England”)

Have you ever wondered why it was so improper for Mr. Collins to introduce himself to Mr. Darcy? Or how about the proper length of time when Paying a Call? What IS the “Red Book” and why is it so important when drawing up a guest list? Was it proper to dine with gloves on or off? Well, then this is the class for you! We will cover Introductions, Order of Precedence, Paying Calls, Dining, Dancing, Deportment, and any other related topics that we can squeeze in. If time permits, a Q & A session will follow the lecture.

    Teacher Provides: Handout
Length of Class: 1 hr, 20 minutes
    Class Type: Lecture

and my last class, which I'm co-teaching with Rebecca Metzger, is:

Timeline of Costuming: A Silhouette Review

Are you easily confused by the variety of fashion eras and their corresponding dates? Can you tell the difference between Rococo & Georgian or Victorian & Edwardian? If not, come join us we explore the fashion silhouettes of the early 1700s to 1920s.

    Teacher Provides: Handout
    Length of Class: 50 minutes
    Class Type: Lecture

So, those are all the classes I'm currently preparing for this year. Whew!

All good stuff, lots of great information...and I'm very excited to be teaching on these topics. If I can only survive until then.

    =)

Good thing I'm *finally* starting to feel like I'm seeing that light at the end of the tunnel!
