    Details regarding Grandpa Art

    Arthur Leonard Thelin (Jr)
    January 18, 1922 - March 26, 2009

My Grandpa Art died in his sleep sometime early in the morning on Thursday (3/26/09). When my Grandma (Doris) and my Aunt Jody went to go wake him up at 8:30am, they discovered that he had already passed. (Probably not too long before, since he was still fairly warm.)

While we're all grieved to loose him, we are glad that he's no longer in pain. His last 8 months, since being diagnosed with cancer, have been difficult (especially for my aunt & grandma, who have been taking care of him daily). We think he *most likely* died of kidney failure, as his kidneys had not been functioning well for a while (due to various meds prescribed).

On Wednesday he had made a comment to the visiting doctor saying that on Monday (earlier in the week) he had thought he was going to see the Lord. And after a visit from his brother Claire (previous week), Grandpa had a tear in his eye. Grandma thinks he knew he wasn't going to be around much longer and was saying his goodbye (to Claire). He has previously mentioned to all of us that he was ready to go whenever the Lord called him home.

I'm so very glad I got to know my grandpa. He was a loving man, a kind father, and a doting grandfather. He loved gardening in his flower-bed (he has some wonder flowers) and taking pictures. Just about all my memories of him involve him having a smile on his face.

I'm also very glad that 2 years ago I took the time to go through with him the box(es) of pictures that he's saved from his life (growing up, as a young man in WWII, just married, working for General Petroleum as a photographer, family photos, etc.) and made notes about the various photos and souvenirs/items saved. At that time we also put together a Memory Book that records his birth through High School Graduation. (My aunt & I were the ones who actually worked on the book, but he was around while we worked on it and loved seeing the book as it progressed).

I will take pictures of the book (the pages) and post them online later. The book will be coming with me to the Memorial Service as well...and so will all the other photos. (I'm currently working on putting up various photos of the book into presentation boards for the Memorial Service. Which I really must get back to now.)

Thank you everyone for all your kind thoughts and prayers and well wishes for the family. I've been passing them along. We really do appreciate it all.
    =)

For those who would like to know, here are a few details concerning the upcoming Funeral & Memorial Service:

There will be a Viewing at the Alhiser-Comer Mortuary, in Escondido, CA on Thursday, April 2, 2009 at 8:00pm.

The Funeral itself will be private (family only) on Friday, April 3, 2009 at 10:30am at Oak Hill Memorial Park (Escondido, CA).

The Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2009, at 2:00 P.M. at Westminster Presbyterian Church followed by a reception in the fellowship hall.

    The New Haircut

Yes, I did it. I cut my hair!
It's short (well, short for me), slightly layered,... and I LOVE it!
    =)

Here's a picture of us (me and Sherri) as she's about to start cutting my hair.

I came with my 1940s Hairstyles book (by Daniela Turudich, unfortunately out of print now) and pointed to the Lauren Bacall pic (p. 47), saying I wanted her haircut. (I'll need to do curlers to get her hair STYLE, but the length/layering is about the same).

It's about shoulder length with the U-shape cut (not a blunt-cut), and its slightly layered.

And the final Product (with pile of cut hair on the floor)....

    Ta-Da!

it could only happen to me

So, I just spend the last number of minutes cleaning up almost a gallon of spilled Ice/Sun Tea from the Kitchen (Work's Kitchen) Floor using paper towels. (Good thing it wasn't Sweet Tea, or it'd be a sticky mess that I'd be mopping up using paper towels).

    And "Why...?" do you ask?
    Well, because....its me.

I picked up the container one handed by the top/lid - like I and my co-worker do *countless* times...only this time apparently the lid wasn't QUITE as secure as it should be, and the lid stayed in my hand while the container dropped towards the floor.

On the slightly positive side, the container hit my leg/foot before the ground - and while that may not seem like a positive (something hitting me), it at least help deflect the straight-to-the ground impact so that the glass container did NOT break.

And just enough of the Ice Tea was left in the container that I could FINALLY get my glass of Ice Tea. =)

I have my car back!!! =)

Just a quick note to tell everyone that I do indeed have my car back from the autobody shop! Yay!!! =)

The front grill is back in place, the damage to behind the rear bumper is fixed, and the bumper is replaced. Excellent!!

And my rental was returned this morning without me needing to pay a dime for the rental costs.
    (Double Yes!!)

It is always nice to be able to drive one's own vehicle.

This pic is from the Hensley Babyshower. I dressed 1930s that day (and 1940s-ish on the day before/Saturday the 7th). Isn't this pic of me holding little Rowan cute?

I've kinda/sorta been thinking of cutting my hair for a while now (hey, it at least needs a trim), but I can't decide if I should just trim it or go ahead and cut it....

and since I just got some comments about my facebook status message (re: thinking about possibly cutting my hair)...

I went ahead created a Poll on my Blog for people to vote on my hair length!
    LOL :-)

Feel free to vote. Have your opinion heard!

another update on the (recent) car situation

So, I had planned to take off the afternoon from work in order to take my car in to the autobody shop (repairs needed from the most recent accident, back in February), get a rental car (fortunately covered by the other insurance company), and run a few errands. What ended up happening, though....well, things never do go quite as you plan, do they?
    ;-)

For one thing, I cetainly wasn't able to leave work at noon (too much going on right then. I did eventually leave the office, take my car into the shop (got there around 2pm) and was driven over to the car rental place by around 2:30pm. Unfortunately, the car rental took longer than anticipated.

We drove to the nearby rental location (Orange?), to start the paperwork...but then had to drive to another location as the car set aside for me wasn't at that location. So got back into the car, drove down to a location in Santa Ana (off the 55 fwy...the exit right near that REI store you can see from the freeway =), got the keys to the car (gray Toyota Camry), did the brief inspection and was *about* to finish filling out/singing the paperwork when we got to the Rental Car Insurance question.

    Doh!!!!

Apparently, that is one thing (other than the deposit and gas) that is not covered by the Insurance company (who is paying for the actual cost of car rental). So I had to call my insurance company to find out if my coverage extends to a rental car, since I need to know if I should accept or decline any of the rental agency's insurance options. (Obviously, if I accepted them, the cost would come out of my pocket...and those prices/day are kinda, well, pricey...especially when you don't know how long you might have the to use the rental car). Eventually, I got through to a live person who looked at my policy/account, and was able to verify that my policy does extend to rental cars, so I didn't need the coverage offered by the rental car company. Whew!
    =)

(I actually ended up talking to two different departments - Customer Service & Claims - and both gals told me the same thing, that I my policy extends coverage to the rental car =).

All this, though, ate up a bit of time, between the driving and being on the phone to figure out the answer to my insurance question. But I couldn't leave just yet. Oh no!

Apparently, the car detail/wash service that usually comes by to service their cars hadn't been by yet, so the car has not yet been vaccumed out from the last person to use it. Ugh! And I didn't really want to drive off in a dirty car (and yes, there was a bit of dirt/'stuff' on the floor of the interior of the car....it was obviously in need of vaccuuming). So, while they found a vaccum to clean up the inside, I went over to the nearby nail salon and got my nails done. =) (I did have to wait a few minutes before someone was available, but that was ok. I was killing time anyways). By the time my manicure was done (with Bright Red Nail polish, of course! =), it was now 4:00pm, and I could FINALLY get the keys and drive off in the rental car.

    <Sigh of Relief>  Yay!
    =)

(Fortunately, I did manage to get a couple of other errands in still, including filling the gas tank - this rental car company only gives you 1/4 tank to drive off in, and of course I will need to return it with only a 1/4 tank of gas.)

And that's my story for this afternoon.
    =)

    update #2 on my car

Just met with the Insurance Adjuster (Senior Claims Representative) again - and he handed me his estimate (which covered the rear bumper, the back frame/structural damage, and the front grill) and a check.
    Woo-hoo!
    =)

And they'll set me up with a rental car while my car is being worked on, so that's defintely good. (I only have to pay for the deposit and the gas).

Now I just need to figure out when I can drive my car over to my autobody shop, call the rental car company, and get my car fixed.

Definitely a step in the right direction, at least.
    =)

    update on my car

well, the Insurance Adjuster is here, and he's currently writing up the estimate.

There definitely is structural damage (to the back floor). This guy got down on the ground (on his back) to look up under the car/rear bumper, and he could see the damage there just from that. So then we opened up the back hatch, lifted up the floor, took out the spare tire...and there was the buckled section.

Oh well. At least he will write it up in the estimate (and he took pictures), and since this is not a cosmetic thing, the autobody shop should be able to just take the section out, fix it, and put it back in (instead of having to replace it completely, like they will have to do with my rear bumper).

Now just 'fingers crossed' that they'll also approve the replacement of the missing front grill, since while I can't *prove* that it went missing during the accident (that it flew off), it certainly was there before the accident and it was gone afterwards (my dad noticed it the next morning when I showed him the car).
