Moorpark Civ.War Event is still a Go (even w/ forecast of Rain)

Just got the word - our event this weekend is STILL on, even though the Weather Forecast looks pretty dismal. (Rain and 60 Degree Temps. Brr! Get chills just thinking about it!)

Hopefully the rain will hold off long enough that we can our gear/camps get set up BEFORE the rain hits on Friday. (Fingers Crossed!!)

Send some warm & dry thoughts my way, won't ya? (Weekend's challenge: stay healthy / don't get sick! :)

Guess I better get cracking on those food items as I'll definitely need them this weekend!!

    Subject: Moorpark Reenactment Update

    My fellow reenactors,

The Rotary has decided to go forward with the event this weekend. Yes, the weather report is not promising, and everyone is well aware of that, but the problem is that critical personnel on the Rotary's side will be missing the following weekend, so come what may, the event will take place as scheduled.

The good news is that rainfall in Moorpark always seems to be different than what LA gets. Last weekend, the rainfall was 3/4 inch in LA, but only a third of an inch in Moorpark. The ground at the site is very good at wicking up rain, so the Rotary is optimistic that the problems with the weather will be minimized. Currently, no rain is expected at all until very late Friday night, so this should aid setup. Even then, who really knows at this point with weather predictions just what will happen and when? I understand that Sunday is supposed to be clear.

So, now it's on to Moorpark. C'mon out and join us for the weekend.

So I'll just have to find something at my local JoAnn's mega-store. Here's the 3 colors I finally settled on to pick between. Now realize that the colors appearing on your monitor look WAY different than what they looked like in person (to me) when I was browsing the fabric selection, so here are the colors:
Navy Blue Crepe Back Satin on Right. Teal ("Legion Blue") Crepe Back Satin on Bottom. Pink ("Carmine") Crepe Back Satin on Left.

Adventures in Ticket Purchasing (Harry Potter Group Movie Outing)

Yesterday afternoon tickets for non-Midnight showings of Harry Potter at Cinema Fusion Anaheim went on sale. Yes! (Finally!!)

Besides the fact that Cinema Fusion Anaheim is a pretty nice movie theater, in a nice outdoor shopping center (Garden Walk of Anaheim, near Disneyland), it also happens to have a 21+ Screening Room! Yes, that's right - one of their theater rooms is reserved for patrons who are at least 21 years old. (And yes, they do have a bar, so you can have beer or wine with your movie, if you prefer :)

The main selling point for my group with regards to this location for our group movie outing is the fact that while we all like the Harry Potter movies, and most of us going are costumers (or know someone who costumes) and will use any reasonable excuse to dress up ;-), we all REALLY like the idea of seeing the next Harry Potter movie without a gaggle of noisy kids in the audience!

As I'm the designated person to check show times and buy a block of tickets for our group :), I've been checking the website seems like daily for a while now, but no luck....until yesterday afternoon/evening. (I was in contact via email with someone at the theater, and had been told to definitely start checking on late Monday afternoon, 7/7...but unfortunately nothing was posted on Monday ). So, yesterday when I got home from work, I checked the theater website and saw that times were now posted for non-midnight showings! Yes! I immediately looked to see if there's *an around 8pm* showing for Friday 7/17. (Our ideal time since we have people driving down from Los Angeles to join us in the OC). However, the only 8:00pm showing was in the regular (general/family) theater and not the 21+ theater. Our choices were either 7:15pm or 10:15pm...so I quickly decided upon the 7:15pm and attempted to buy the block of tickets.

Problem! Oh no! Website would only allow a max of 6 tickets to be purchased at a time. I could theoretically purchase 6, and then go through the steps again...twice... to make sure I buy enough tickets for our group of 13. But that's just plain annoying. Group ticket discount doesn't start until you have a min. of 25 people, but you can't purchase more than 6 online? What's with that? (Plus, who knows if the credit card company will find multiple purchases from the same place w/in a matter of minutes a tad suspicious? Don't really want to find out).

So, by this time, I'm a tad frustrated cause I can't find a number to call the theater directly and talk to a 'live' person. And I decide I'll just DRIVE over to the box office and buy the tickets directly. They should be able to sell me enough ticktes in one purchase. So I did.
    =)

I quickly sent out an email to the group to let them know of the change in estimated time (to an actual time), and that I was driving over to purchase the tickets. And then while I was driving I started placing phone calls to make sure people got the message. (Didn't want to get tickets for someone if they couldn't make the 7:15pm show after all!) Fortunately, no one had a problem with the slightly earlier time for the show. (Later would have been easier for people traveling, obviously, but that wasn't the hand that we were dealt).

Instead of heading directly to the theater, though, I took a detour and headed over to the Hensley's place, since they're fairly near my destination. After chatting for a few minutes (and they finished their dinner), Charlie, Rowan, & I went over to buy tickets (while Maegen and Rhiannon stayed home...Rhiannon decided to skip joining us cause she was dressed in her pretty blue princess dress and wanted to watch Cinderella while mom sewed ;-).

At the Garden Walk, we made our way over to the theater, and I went inside to purchase 13 tickets while Charlie walked around (pushing Rowan in his stroller).

Success!! I was able to purchase 13 tickets for Friday, July 17th at 7:15pm.
And I let them know we were coming in costume!
The guy working the register asked me what I/we were coming as, so I rattled off a few of the names of characters (outfits) we had signed up. He then turned to his co-worker (or manager, not sure), and said something to the effect of 'make sure I'm working that night' :).
    LOL!

I made sure to get the parking structure ticket validated at the Theater, then went to find Charlie & Rowan. I eventually met up with them, and we made our way to the car...only to discover at the car that the now-validated parking structure ticket was MISSING! Ack!!! Frantic searching was to no avail. I went through my entire purse and wallet (a few times)...even had Charlie look. Nothing. I retraced my steps, went back to the theater and inquired if I had somehow left it or dropped it as I left...still nothing.

Dissapointed, I continued to retrace my steps and even asked a janitor if he saw a parking structure ticket on the ground. (His English wasn't that great, so I'm not sure if he really understood my question. Oh well).

I met up with Charlie on a different level of the parking structure, where he had stopped after driving around with Rowan (who had started fussing while just sitting in the carseat in an unmoving car). We watched the end of the Disneyland fireworks (well, I semi-watched...I was still going through my purse and wallet...again) while Rowan had a bottle.

When the fireworks ended, we gave up on finding the ticket and made our way to the exit where we spilled our sob story about losing the ticket and only coming in to purchase tickets (which I showed). This guy wouldn't budge - no ticket = pay max parking fee ($12!!). Bummer!

Though dissapointing to have to pay the parking fee, at LEAST we did manage to score enough Harry Potter tickets for the day and time we wanted. :) Yay!!!

(And yes, I double checked that I had all 13 as we left the parking structure :)

So that's my adventure in buying tickets for the new Harry Potter movie!

AND if anyone else would like to join us, feel free to come along. (You just need to get your own tickets). The more the merrier!!
    :)

    Yarn Bought! (Molly Weasley Outfit)

Pile O' Yarn for the Molly Weasley Sleeves

It's official! I've bought the yarn needed to start crocheting the Molly Weasley sleeves. (Chamber of Secrets movie, outfit worn by Molly in the Burrows)

I think I bought enough of each color...but we'll see as I start to crochet it.
    =)

Guess that means I better get cracking at this project, now that I've bought the yarn.
    ;-)

(Of course, I'll still need to go Thrift Store shopping to find a pink knit cardigan that I can rip off the sleeves and attach these sleeves too...I'm better at crochet than knitting, so I'm not about to knit myself the sweater just to attach the sleeves to it! =).

    Not-So-Pink Ballet Slippers

Ok, so one thing that has been my 'goal' to change for my Regency (Jane Austen Evening) outfit is the super obvious "ballet pink" slippers.

The ballet slippers are fine in and of themselves (especially with orthopedic inserts in them), but I just couldn't stand how the pink clashed horribly with my deep red dress.

And now, I've found the solution! Dye my shoes! They're leather, so they should take a dye, right?

Here's what I've come up with as a 'quick' fix...use red shoe polish. And based on the results so far (one shoe done), things are promising. I'm liking what I'm seeing. It's just enough different to be acceptable. Yay!
    =)

Now, to do the other shoe and turn in (so I can get some sleep tonight).
    =)

    Regency Corset Progress

Current project: trying to finish up a Regency Corset that I promised to make for my sister.
    Goal (finished date): this Saturday!!!

Yup, that's right, I'm mid-project and trying to finish something up so that it can be worn on Saturday at the Jane Austen Evening. (Only this time the item I'm hurriedly trying to finish won't be worn by me! =)

A week or so ago, I was held up cause the wooden busk I had made for this corset was too long, so I had to get a friend to shave off 1/2". (I was SO bummed that after my careful measuring of the length needed for the corset, I was off by 1/2"). At the same time, I discovered I needed a few more bones (especially 2 spiral steel bones in lengths I didn't have on hand), so I ended up placing an order through Hedgehog. (Fortunately, I got in on the super sale that they're having right now...and of course, Hedgehog is always great on customer service and shipping things out right away =).

Anyways, just when I get my wooden busk fixed and the newly ordered bones arrive...I got sick was out of it for a few days and then had a super busy weekend (last weekend). So, now, after getting back into a more normal routine, I'm back to focusing on FINISHING this project.
And I'm SO close, too! =)

Earlier this evening, I bound the two sides of the bottom of the section for the wooden busk (so that the busk is removable), made 4 hand sewn eyelets (2 on the fashion fabric side, and 2 on the coutil/lining side) so that I can tie the busk into place, made a casing out of some (100% natural cotton) batting, and inserted all the bones and the wooden busk. Whew!

(And that doesn't even count the fact that I took a little time away from this project to finish pinning my 2nd row of eyelet lace ruffle to my half-finished over-petticoat - for yet another project/'era' - and then sew down that ruffle...and of course iron my seam afterwards.)

So, right Now...I'm pinning the bias binding in place, and sewing that on. I probably will have to finish the pinning & sewing on the bias tomorrow, but seeing how much progress I made tonight, I'm actually hopeful I can finish this up in time. (And still have time to play with my hair tomorrow and figure out some kind of hairstyle for me to wear on Saturday =).

    Later!
    =)

    sewing/progress update (1950s outfit)

Just finishing up the last of my tulle petticoat right now. Had a setback yesterday in my sewing when my machine broke on me.

Spent like an hour trying to fix it, but I eventually gave up. I'm going to need to take it in. Something is wrong and causing the needle thread to catch on the works down where the bobbin is. Also, was having difficulty in catching the bobbin thread when attempting to pull it up so I could sew. The needle wouldn't return all the way to the right position. It'd get almost there, and then stop...and not pull up the thread. Needless to say, I was frustrated and had a setback in my 'quick' sewing projects that I had left for Saturday.

Eventually I remembered that my roommate Jill had a machine boxed up, and I asked her if I could use it. She graciously let me borrow her machine, a Shark Automatic (with the basic stitch functions at least), so I could finish my projects for today. Yea for my roommate! =)

So, that's my status report. Finished my belt for the dress, and got really close to done with the tulle petticoat, but was just too tired last night (after 10pm) to be productive at sewing, so I'm finishing it now. Need to stitch down the pinned tulle to the base, then add in a waistband (haven't cut & interfaced yet), and add in my hook & bar closure. And then I'm done and can get ready.

I was hoping to be able to get ready in time that I could wear this outfit to church this morning, but looks like that's not going to happen. Oh well.

At least I should be done with the outfit in time to wear it to the Movie, my original goal, and that's the important part! =)

We're meeting at 1:15pm outside the theater (movie starts at 2pm), then headed to Clifton's cafeteria (place has been in business since the 1930s) for an early dinner afterwards. What fun! =)

Ok, must get back to sewing so I can finish and then get started on my hair/makeup, etc.

    Later!

    Current Sewing Project: 1950s outfit

So, I'm doing a quick project so I can wear a 1950s outfit on Sunday to White Christmas (showing at the LA Theater - see my previous blog posting in November =).

Well, Colleency was nice enough to loan me a dress so I don't have to start from scratch (with basically a week to make an outfit). Yea for Collency! =) You rock! So all I need to do is make a belt and a petticoat (with tulle) to make the dress 1950s. And of course accessorize, accessorize, accessorize!
    =)

Maegen loaned me one of her set of pearls (her grandmother's I believe she said) and a pearl bracelet (which she made), and I have a little black velvet headband hat (with black feathers) that I'll be wearing. And of course some gloves (white with black polka dots - also loaned by Collency), stockings, heals and a nice hairdo/make-up will complete the picture! (I might even have a small purse that will work with this outfit too).

What would really be nice is if my recently ordered book, How to Handle Long Hair -- Recreating Glamorous 1950s Hairstyles (http://www.amazon.com/Handle-Recreating-Glamorous-1950s-Hairstyles/dp/1934268720/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1228418453&sr=8-1 ), arrives in time for me to try out one or more of the hairstyles and see if any will work for Sunday's outing.

    I'm so excited about Sunday.
    =)

Which means today's goal for my Lunch Break Errands: purchase supplies (such as tulle) needed at JoAnns...so I can get started with cutting & sewing tonight!

helping out at LosCon 35 - Costume Repair Station

So, a couple of days ago, I started toying with the idea that since I'm already going to be at LosCon for the evening programming (to see my friends in the Lux Theater group perform), perhaps I could just hang out for the day at LosCon and even help out at the Costume Repair Station (CRS). And then when I checked the website's list of departments, I saw that a friend of mine is heading up the CRS, so I spontaneously decided to email her and find out if she needed help or not.

And of course, she does. =)
(Seriously, though, did I really expect her to say, "No, I don't need addtional help. I've got plenty of volunteers lined up"? LOL! I should know better =).

Anyways, since I didn't really have any scheduled plans for the Friday (during the day), I've now decided to go ahead and help out at the CRS! Go me!

And to think I've actually never yet been to LosCon (and now I'm going to be volunteering at it).
    =)

    Should be interesting!

White Christmas playing at the historic LA Theater!

On Sunday December 7th at 2:00pm the Los Angeles Theater (a historic theater in downtown LA) will be showing "White Christmas" (1954). How fun is that? =)

I am SO going! (And I'm going with some other costumers too).

Now, if I can somehow manage to pull together a 1950s outfit in time, that will just be the icing on the cake. =)

FYI - for others interested in coming along, tickets ($10/adult) can be purchased at the LA Conservancy website.

    Hi Rebecca,

In a recent Guinea Pig Review, we put out a call for you to submit garments from specific time periods. Rebecca responded immediately and submitted her 1920s day dress for a Review.

Rebecca is the President of the Historical Citizens Association and has been sewing for a number of years. But her techniques on this garment may surprise, and encourage, you and how you think about putting together a historical ensemble in a pinch.

For all the details and pictures on this month's Guinea Pig Review, go to the Guinea Pig page of our website.

Have you submitted your current, completed, or partially completed historical costumes or projects from the 1780s, 1840s, 1880s, or 1920s yet?

To teach others in the Cloak & Corset community and receive your f.r.e.e report, Quick and Easy Undersleeves, please drop us a line at GuineaPig@cloakandcorset.com and tell us what clothing article you would like to submit.  Ginny will be waiting to hear from you!

New Fabric for my 1930s Skirt

Isn't it Lovely?! My new Red Fabric for my 1930s Shaped Seam Skirt.

On Monday (10/13), I drove up after work to visit with the Hensleys and go fabric shopping!! Yes, I was *finally* getting around to purchasing some fabric for my new 1930s skirt.

In an effort to save money and time, I had decided that instead of creating a whole NEW outfit for the Cicada Club (which I would LOVE to do, if I had the time/money), I would just update my 1930s outfit by making a new skirt that was more suitable for an evening look than my current 'afternoon' wool skirt.

Therefore, since Maegen was willing to go fabric shopping with me (and I always like a second opinion when looking at colors and fabric types), I made time in my schedule to drive up to the Fullerton area. By the time I arrived at the Hensleys' place, Maegen was just behind me in arriving, and soon the whole family (Charlie, Rhiannon, & Maegen) and I loaded up into their car and took off for JoAnns.

After browsing through a few areas of the store, for various items, Maegen & I finally ended up in the home textiles section and found this lovely red/black fabric ('silkessense' - i.e. a poly blend =). When my gold fabric swatch for my blouse was held up next to it, we both just fell in love with how the two just "popped" when combined. I had to have it as my new skirt!
    =)

And fortunately for me, the fabric was even on sale! How awesome is that?!? What timing!

And now I just need to wash (and iron) the fabric, cut out the skirt pieces, and start sewing. Shouldn't take *too* long...just need to get started....soon. =)

Just a little update on things...

Since its been SO slow at work these last few days (seriously!! It really needs to pick up around here soon), I thought I should probably post again to catch everyone up on some things.
    =)

[SIDE NOTE: wouldn't you know I *finally* start working on a blog post...and work decides to pick up! LOL! Yea that it got busier here, though =) ].

    1. The Apartment/Bathroom Remodel is (basically) done!

Finally! After 3 weeks, 6 days a week...the remodel is done! Well, except for one minor thing that hasn't yet been fixed (the drill bit broke when they went to drill holes for the toilet paper holder so that it can attach to the wall through the tiled section of the wall). But other than that, no more construction! Yes! Which means as of Saturday (Sept 27th) I officially began cleaning the apartment/my room of the layers of construction dust. It's still ongoing, but I'm finally making a discernable dent in my room. (I did my bookcase in the front/living room first - and between that dust and the dust I attempted to sweep up on the front porch - I ended up with a nice sinus headache later on. Ouch!)

    2. I'm going to Halloween Haunt on Oct 4th!!!

Yes, indeed. I actually am *finally* going to Halloween Haunt. It's been on my 'to do' list for like...forever, but I never got around to going. But this year, Jenn Mulvey has decided to go for her birthday, so I'm joining her and Bryce this Saturday at Knotts for the Haunt. (Anyone else want to join us? Please do!!!!)

And earlier in the day I'll be joining up with some of my friends to celebrate a few October birthdays at a Birthday lunch, which will be fun! =)

    3. I'm going to the Cicada Club on Oct 26th!

Yet another item I've wanted to do at some point. And now that I have some friends going on the 26th, and they've invited me along, I'm going! (Need to update my 1930s outfit to be more evening wear oriented, but that shouldn't be *too* hard to do). I'm currently trying to figure out how to do a really great updo for my hair that's 1930s styled, but haven't come across too many reference pics for med-long length hair. I'd like to do some fingerwaves and curls, probably. (Not that I've tried fingerwaves on me before...which reminds me, I'll need to go buy some setting lotion if I'm going to pull this waved look off properly =).

And since the Club will be featuring Dean Mora and his Orchestra, I think its time for me to start brushing up on my Swing Dancing so I can join in while I'm at the Cicada Club!

    4. Planning Mode for Moorpark (Civil War Event) is kicking in.

Yes indeed. Now that we're about a month (or less) out from the next Civil War event that my group is attending, planning mode is certainly starting to kick in. I'll only be doing/serving two mid-day meals at this event (to my group's members who pre-register/RSVP), and doing a bit of 'for fun' cooking for basically just me and a couple of others throughout the day. And of course, since the event is in November, when the weather is cooler, I'll definitely be making my Mulled Cider! Yum!

    5. Costume College 2008 Postmortem / Costume College 2009 Planning

Yup, it is already time for the CoCo 2008 Postmortem (Oct 12th in Santa Monica). I'll be attending and giving my report (which I still need to write - note to self) on the Roommates Dept. (As I was the Roommates Coordinator/Head for that Dept this last year...and the year before =). Next year, I'll be switching over to a different department (Information/Check-In) as the Head person and will train (unofficially assist) the new Roommates Coordinator. Should be fun! Plus its time to give our brief assesment/review of the classes we taught last year (which will be used most likely in a report at the Postmortem...or at least in reference for planning 2009 classes)...and that's something else I need to write up soon. (Just got an email from the CoCo 2009 Programming Chair asking for that summary report sometime this week). And I need to decide what classes I'd like to volunteer to teach next year. Hmm... Decisions. (Next year is an 18th Century Track. ).

Which reminds me! I need to fill out my Costume College Membership form and have it ready to mail. (The window of time for CGW members to mail in their form is approaching soon! =)

Ok. Well, I guess that's it for now. Must dash!

    Later!
    =)

A Brilliant Time at the Jeeves & Wooster Party

So, yesterday I was the Jeeves & Wooster Party up in the Los Angeles area. I unfortunately arrived late as I was *still sewing* my outfit until 1:30pm (after working non-stop on my new blouse & skirt for the past few days) and the party started at 12:30pm...but I did *eventually* make it to the party! And pretty much, that's really all that counts! That and the fact that I had a blast!

Ok, so I was pretty much a fly on the wall for the first 1/2 hour I was there, but I was soaking it all in, trying to figure out who was who and what was going on. Eventually I did get to interact with a few people and I even participated in the Turtle Roulette! I didn't win, but on the 2nd round I was pretty close. The turtle headed straight for the number *next* to mine (and Jenn Mulvey. Bully for her!).

When I arrived, many of the partygoers were in the midst of playing Find the Shoe. A hillarious game in which the players divide into teams, all the shoes are piled together in a center area (like on a blanket) on the lawn, and the teams are lined up a few feet away. The first person in each line has to race to the pile and find one of his/her shoes and race to put on one shoe (tied/laced) and run back into his/her line while tagging the next person in his/her line to go and find his/her shoe. Each team members goes through twice in order to find and put on both pairs of shoes. The first team to have both pairs of shoes on each team member (with the correct shoes, and actually laced on, not just sort-of on =) wins! It was hillarious watching the participants play *in character*.

    =D

Included in this post is a picture of my completed outfit. I gave my camera to someone else so I could be sure to get one photo of me all dressed up on my camera. Chaz was taking tons of photos throughout the party, so I'm sure he has some great ones that he'll be posting to his website shortly.

To wrap up the party, one of the organizers held a recap session, to see which of the characters met their goals for the afternoon/party. While I missed a good deal of the party, it was certainly entertaining hearing about what happened during the recap!

Afterwards, I helped clean up and then went to dinner with some of the other participants, so I could get to know them. (Hey, I drove all the way out to this place dressed up, and I wanted to make the drive worth it since I was late and missed a good portion of the party! =). We went to dinner at Dinah's (or was it Dinnah's?) on Centinella not to far from the 405. I had to try the 'Special Recipe' Fried chicken that they're apparently famous for, and I gotta say, it wasn't too bad. I meant to take home my leftovers (I had a small amount) and forgot the container on the table. Doh!
Anyways - the conversation during the meal (and before and afterwards) was a riot! We laughed so much (and so loudly)! It was splendid! Good food and good company always is a great time! Eventually, we did have to all leave, as some of us still had some traveling to do (like me!) and all of us had work in the morning.

On my Flickr account are a few photos I took to document how I looked that day/morning. Feel free to check them out.

Too bad no one got a shot (photo) of the waiters faces as we entered!

Our group of 9 certainly had a good time on Saturday, both at the Italian Resturant (for dinner) and then at the SDI Victorian Summer Ball.
